Green Consumerism (at Christmas and beyond)

Green Consumerism (at Christmas and beyond)

In the run-up to the festive season, research shows that households spend around £713 more in December – a 29% increase on a typical month. Here are some statistics taken from Uswitch’s guide to green consumerism:

  • 78% of consumers feel sustainability is an important factor when shopping

  • Eco-friendly products are booming: sustainable goods grew at 9.9% CAGR (2018–2023), outpacing conventional products at 6.4%

  • Over half (55%) are willing to pay more for eco-friendly brands

  • Affordability remains the biggest barrier to sustainable shopping

Ben Gallizzi, energy expert at Uswitch shares tips to help consumers shop more sustainably in the run-up to Christmas:

  1. Gift pre-loved treasures: Choose second-hand clothing, toys, or home decor for thoughtful, unique presents. Charity shops and online marketplaces like eBay, Vinted or Depop can be great places to source pre-loved gifts or second-hand clothing for those festive events.

  2. Invest in lasting gifts: It’s not always about quantity but quality, so try to pick items that will stand the test of time, rather than short-lived trends. Consider gifts that are multifunctional or can be used for years to come. When it comes to your Christmas decorations, it can be tempting to buy into new trends. Instead, focus on what you really love and look forward to putting up every year.

  3. Support local makers: Buying locally sourced foods and handcrafted gifts from local artisans, farmers, and producers helps to reduce transportation emissions and support small businesses. Plus, local treats and handmade products often have a personal touch that makes them feel extra special.

  4. Wrap wisely: Rethink traditional wrapping paper and plastic ribbons, which are often non-recyclable. Opt for reusable or recyclable options such as fabric wraps, newspaper, brown paper, or even scarves.

  5. Bring your festive tote: Keep a reusable shopping bag handy for all your Christmas food and present shopping. This simple habit helps cut down on single-use plastics and makes trips to the shops more convenient and cheaper!
